!!!! I will not mention shading - because I don't want to!!!!! I kind of understand what your saying. To do an animation, you get a some sprites that can make one whole motion like for example you have like 5 walking sprites for one person and you use that for the animation. To keep them walking in one place, place the next sprite in the same place as the previous one. To make sprites you must use the elite pencil. Never ever use the paint colors that are already there. For beginners they usually just recolor a sprite. For some people they do frankensteins which are sprites that you just C+P(copy and paste) parts together. Many people get a base for a sprite. A base is like the begining structure of the sprite. When people use bases they usually try to make their sprite look nothing like the base at all. Some people scratch sprites. Scratching sprites are when you dont use a base you just make a sprite from thin air. It takes skill and imagination to make a sprite. So you have to be creative when making a sprite.

1. Start with a base. This is your starting sprite. This is the sprite i=that your sprite will look most like. Open it up in paint. (BTW: your base if probably beast out Gregar)
2. Color and Eidt. Change the color of the base, and edit it. Spend AT LEAST 30 minutes on this. The more time your spend, the better the sprite. Always.
3. Final Touches. Smooth it out, and make it look good. Add little things that will help the sprite look better.
BTW: Your goal is to make the sprite look AS DIFFERENT FROM THE BASE AS POSSIBLE!
